A .fast5 file is a type of HDF5 (<a href="https://support.hdfgroup.org/HDF5/whatishdf5.html" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Hierarchical Data Format</a>) file, which is designed to contain all information needed for analysing nanopore sequencing data and tracking it back to its source.

Fast5 files contain the raw data, such as signal information generated during sequencing. Metadata within the fast5 file format can be viewed with the graphical tool <a href="https://www.hdfgroup.org/downloads/hdfview/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">HDFView</a>.
