Can I use a GPU with MinKNOW to basecall in real time?
Updated over a week ago

Using a GPU to basecall in real-time is performed by default on all Oxford Nanopore Devices with integrated compute like the GridION, PromethION, and Mk1C.

From MinKNOW v23.07 onwards, our new basecaller Dorado has been integrated into MinKNOW. This enables accelerated basecalling with both NVIDIA GPUs and Apple Silicon Macs. We strongly recommend using an NVIDIA GPU or Apple Silicon Mac (M1/M2) if you want real time basecalling to keep up with the rate of data generation.

MinION Mk1B users with a Linux, Mac or Windows computer using either a NVIDIA GPU or an Apple Silicon (M1/M2) Mac can configure MinKNOW to use a GPU for live basecalling as per instructions here. P2-Solo users with a Linux, Mac or Windows computer using either a NVIDIA GPU or an Apple Silicon (M2) Mac can configure MinKNOW to use a GPU for live basecalling as per instructions here.
